Christkindlmarkt is an intangible cultural experience as main squares of cities across Europe and the U.S. transform into winter wonderlands. The experience continues to evolve from a single day sharing of meats and food goods outside a church entrance in early times to a multiple day (and weeks) festival of activities, specialty foods, and handcrafted goods of modern times. German Christkindlmarkts trace their origins as far back at the 15th and 16th centuries. Dresden’s market first opened for one day on Christmas Eve in 1434. The oldest evidence of Nuremberg’s Christmas market dates to 1628, although some suspect it stretches back at least to 1530. December markets, or early markets of the season, can be found in Vienna in 1298, Munich in 1310, and Frankfurt in 1393. In Germany today, there are 2,500 to 3,000 annual Christkindlmarkts.
