Colorful Hamburg
A special exhibition “One City Becomes Colorful” based on the book of the same name published in 2022 is on display at the Museum of Hamburg History. The exhibition examines Hamburg’s graffiti history from 1980-1999 and shows the city’s transformation from a gray, Post-war architecture, and wasteland into a colorful one that along with Paris, Amsterdam and Munich, was one of the European epicenters of the graffiti and hip-hop scene. When the often-spray-painted pictures, lettering and signs found their way from the U.S. to Europe in the early 1980s, a growing youth culture scene quickly developed along the Elbe River.
