A Golden Roof

AUSTRIA

At the heart of the Old Town district, the Golden Roof is a landmark of Innsbruck. Emperor Maximilian I had the Golden Roof, a magnificent oriel covered with 2,657 fire-gilded copper shingles in the late Gothic style, built between 1497 and 1500 on the south front of the government building known as the Neuhof. Nikolaus Türing the Elder is considered the architect and creator of the reliefs. The fresco decoration is attributed to Jörg Kölderer, the court painter of Emperor Maximilian I. The special quality of this building was only recognized at the end of the 19th century and the start of Tyrol tourism.
