125 Years of Gornergrat Railway


On August 20, 1898, the Gornergrat Railway, Switzerland’s first electric track railway, travelled up the Gornergrat (3,089 m [10,134 ft]) for the first time. From this date on, this pioneering feat of railway engineering enabled visitors to discover the mystical mountain and glacier world above Zermatt and had a lasting impact on tourism in the small town. 2023 marked the railway’s 125th anniversary with numerous events including an online “Gorgenrgrat Bahn – 125 Stories” (gornergrat.ch/en/stories) which, as the one to follow, shares rail stories.
