An excursion to the Alps in winter through early spring provides opportunity for a myriad of outdoor sporting activities. Ski enthusiasts can partake in downhill, backcountry, and cross-country (Nordic) skiing, or go off-piste (piste is French for “ski slope,” and off-piste refers to unmarked or unpatrolled areas). Other popular Alpine sports include snowboarding, sledding, ice skating, curling, hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking. Not all the fun can be found on the springtime slopes though as Alpine towns themselves have much to offer. An exploration of two Best of the Alps ski resort destinations highlights their unique winter cultures and site-specific activities that can be experienced, weather dependent, even through late April.
