Winter fun in Carinthia’s Katschberg!

“Pizza position! Watch those poles! Knees bent!” Phew, learning to ski in your 40s requires as much mental focus as physical coordination. But with Dominik Seibald—a ski instructor, mountain guide, and frontman of the Austrian band Landrocker —as my patient teacher, I persevered. After mastering the beginner slope, I finally graduated to join the “real” skiers on the blue run. Reaching this milestone was exhilarating as it marked my furthest progression yet.


Though I’m an occasional skier at best, a recent trip to Salzburg, Austria presented the perfect opportunity to return to the slopes. The Katschberg ski resort was just over an hour away by shuttle—an easy journey that promised both skiing and the beloved après-ski experience. “We cater to everyone, from absolute beginners to seasoned veterans, ages 0 to 99,” explained Patrick Lengdorfer, Director of Tourism at Katschberg. “Gone are the days when skiing meant being on the slopes from dawn till dusk. Today’s visitors expect activities, experiences, and culinary temptations beyond the slopes.”
