This imperial city’s legacy shines in architecture, museum collections, and modern artistry.

For over six centuries, the Austrian capital stood at the heart of the Habsburg Empire, transforming from a modest Danube trading post into one of Europe’s most magnificent imperial cities. Its story begins in ancient times when Celtic tribes first settled in the area. In the first century AD, the Romans established the military camp of Vindobona here, a strategic stronghold guarding the empire’s northern frontier against Germanic incursions.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, centuries of upheaval followed as waves of Avars, Slavs, and Magyars swept across the region. By the 10th century, the Babenberg dynasty had established stable rule, marking Vienna’s emergence as an important center in the Holy Roman Empire. The Habsburgs succeeded them in the 13th century and would shape Vienna into the political and cultural heart of a vast European empire.
