Ticino is an oddity and a world of its own in Switzerland. For centuries, Italian influence prevailed until, in 1803, the canton, more or less voluntarily, joined the Swiss Confederation. Today, Ticino is a pleasant hybrid of southern dolce vita and northern efficiency. Citrus fruits and pastel-colored houses replace the expected cheese fondue and wooden chalets, while trains, of course, run precisely on time like everywhere else in Switzerland. Anyone in the mood for relaxed shopping or for sitting quietly in a café overlooking the piazza will find plenty of opportunities in towns like Locarno or nearby Ascona on Lago Maggiore.
