Historic Zoar

German Separatist settlers brought a spirit of resourcefulness and hospitality that continues to thrive in Ohio.

“If any man wishes to obtain a short respite from the turmoil of the world in which he lives, let him locate himself a few days at Zoar,” wrote a correspondent in The Cincinnati Enquirer in 1832. Through spiritual resolve and a “community of goods” society, a small enclave of German Separatists created an idyllic Ohio village with extensive farmlands which by the latter half of the 19th century were worth 1.5 million dollars. Today, Historic Zoar Village which was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2017, exists as a thriving town and a living museum of German American history.
