Explore one of the world’s most livable cities.

Confident and affluent, Zurich embodies the epitome of Swiss excellence, boasting a strong financial sector, picturesque Alpine vistas, and a penchant for luxurious living. Endowed with clean air, a breath-taking lake, and a charming Altstadt (Old Town) area adorned with upscale shops and eateries, it’s no surprise that the locals radiate contentment. On a lovely late summer weekend, I paid a visit to one of the world’s most livable cities.
Zurich is often mistaken for being the Swiss capital but whereas this honor goes to much smaller Bern, it is the country’s biggest city with 400,000 inhabitants. But it doesn’t feel like a metropolis. The airport is ten minutes from the city, any distance can be covered in a good 20 minutes by bike, and the streets are spotless. When Irish writer and poet James Joyce moved to Zurich in 1915, he said: “If you spilled minestra (minestrone) on the Bahnhofstrasse you could eat it right up without a spoon”.
