Germans love swimming … a term that entails much more than just the activity of moving in water. It can be swimming in a river, a lake, in the sea, or in an elegant bath house. One can swim alone, in a competition, or for enjoyment with friends and family. Swimming is an activity the whole German family looks forward to much like a picnic and can take place in a neighborhood swimming area that may have several pools of varying temperatures and water depths including a Kinderplantschbecken (shallow children’s pool). It may have showers and small cabins for rent where one can change from street clothes into swimwear. It may have a large sunbathing lawn with several parts: one with reclining seats and deckchairs; another with a large grassy area for spreading towels or bathing blankets where a family can establish a picnic place; and open spaces for activities such as walking, playing soccer, volleyball or even basketball. There may also be a cantina with all kinds of snacks and drinks. Some public and private swimming pools are famous for their restaurants that treasure the tradition of serving exquisite, modestly priced, gourmet food under shady trees where older family members can relax for hours while the youngsters enjoy the water.
