The Mansion
German migrants helped to develop many region’s industries and played a significant role in forming important cultural institutions such as the Hegeler Carus Mansion, located at 1307 7th Street in La Salle, Illinois. Completed in 1876 for Edward C. Hegeler, a partner in the nearby Matthiessen & Hegeler Zinc Company (M & H), the Second Empire Italianate styled mansion was designed by noted Chicago architect William W. Boyington. The Hegeler family resided in the mansion through 2004 when Edward’s grandson, Alwin passed away just twelve days shy of his 103rd birthday. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2007, it is now owned and operated by the Hegeler Carus Foundation and is open to the public. While the interior has faded with the passing of time, painstaking renovation to the original décor using historical photographs is ongoing.
