Bielefeld
This city in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia, sits in the shadow of a 30-year-old satirical hoax that claims the city is completely fictional. Those in the know, know that the city at the foot of the mighty Sparrenburg and the intersection of two old trading routes, has a lot to offer. The Ravensberger Spinnerei—once the site of the European market leader of flax spinning—is home to museums, cinemas, and open-air spaces, while the venerable Waldhof hosts contemporary art exhibits. The Old Market square in the heart of Old Town, enchants visitors with its half-timbered houses and historic façades such as Bankhaus Lampe. The Crüwell House, with its 7,000 Delft tiles, is a beautiful Weser Renaissance building. The Teutoburg Forest runs through the center of Bielefeld and covers about one fifth of the city’s entire area.
