Visions and New Beginnings
Vienna celebrated “150 Years of the Vienna World’s Fair” in 2023, an anniversary that in spirit is all about how the city reinvented itself in the years around 1873 and continues to thrive today.
There are several events around the World’s Fair of 1873 that led to Vienna becoming a global city and improving its citizens’ quality of life. The first Viennese high-source pipeline with its crystal-clear spring water was installed. New train stations and railway lines turned the city into a central European railway hub at a stroke. The birth of modern city tourism occurred with the building of many hotels, like the legendary Hotel Imperial, and coffee houses, like Café Landtmann. It brought about the establishment of museums and collections such as MAK (Museum of Applied Arts) and KHM (Kunsthistorisches Museum). And Austria’s first environmental campaign also took place at the gates to Vienna when the Vienna Woods were rescued from being cut down. The 1873 World’s Fair was about new beginnings.
