Prize winners at the international short film festival, Vienna Shorts, are being awarded trees instead of trophies. It is a statement for climate protection and sustainability and the 2023 Vienna Shorts was the first festival to award “green trophies” in the form of trees. Working in cooperation with Vienna City Garden Directorate, 20 new trees (ten for 2023 and ten for 2024) are now planted in a wide variety of places—in streets, parks and cemeteries. Each tree is dedicated to a Vienna Shorts winner with a plaque attached containing information about the tree species, the film and the category in which it won a prize. The award-winning short films can also be streamed in the vicinity of the tree with a smartphone and QR code. This is a unique opportunity for a greater audience to experience these films and creates a cinematic tree walk through the city in the years to come.
