I sat with my daughters on a misty early evening just below the entrance at Neuschwanstein, where we were some of the last visitors drenched in the awe-inspiring beauty of King Ludwig’s fairy tale castle. After nearly two weeks we were at the end of an adventure where I finally introduced them to German culture and the ending couldn’t be more perfect, despite what felt like a chaotic mess at times.
Since the time my oldest daughter (Amelie, 16) was born I looked forward to taking her and later her sister (Emmi, 10), to Germany and sharing all the places that had inspired my fascination with the country. German culture had always been a part of their lives, from children’s books to holiday treats to Saturday morning German class. A trip was long overdue and the 30th anniversary of my first trip to Germany made it the perfect time.
