Friederika Göhring was born on March 30, 1821. The youngest of three children, Friederika spent the first years of her life in a small Prussian town known as Oberhäldrungenkreis. Friederika’s parents, Heinrich and Suzanna Göhring, were poor, but very diligent workers. Gathering up large stones from the fields near their home so their father could plow the garden was one of four-year-old Friederika’s jobs. By the time she was twelve, she worked for another family to earn the money to pay for her Confirmation clothes. Although Friederika worked from early morning until late at night, her wages were very meager—only $1.00 for a month’s work—and were given to her parents to help with the family expenses.
