I’m not quite sure of the first time I received a notification like “This looks like a long document. Would you like [fill in name of proprietary AI of the software’s choice] to summarize it for you?” My answer has been consistently “No”, although most times I haven’t been required to answer what I assume is a rhetorical AI question.
This column isn’t going to be 100 percent curmudgeonly. You’ll see that there are some artificial intelligence benefits I like and recommend. But first I must get a few things out of my system. In the last two years, generative AI programs have moved from being a novelty to becoming burrowed into everything from Google search responses to customer service scripts. I don’t turn off the AI response that any Google search now produces (can it be turned off?), but you can be darn sure that I check those responses to make sure they’re not some type of hallucination.
