Exploring a city of two rivers.

The first thing you notice about Koblenz is that everyone points towards the water. Ask for directions and a local will orientate themselves by the rivers. Mention a favorite viewpoint and it invariably overlooks one of them. Even the city’s name reflects its geography. Founded by the Romans as Confluentes, meaning “the confluence”, Koblenz sits where Father Rhine meets Mother Mosel, a strategic position that has shaped its fortunes for almost 2,000 years.
“Many travellers pass through on a Rhine cruise or use it as a base for exploring the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley,” explains Verena Mettler, my tour guide from Visit Koblenz. “But we have so much to offer for a longer stop like vineyards, a huge fortress, castles and riverside promenades. Not to forget wine bars, café terraces, and delicious Rhineland food.”
