A Taste of Sion

Savor the wine, the history, and the vine culture of this Valais capital.

Around a third of Swiss wine is produced in the Valais vineyards—an area extending over 62 miles along the Rhône between 885 and 3,608 feet above sea level. A diversity of climate factors such as temperature (mean of 53˚F), sun exposure (2,005 hours a year), and rainfall (around 22 inches a year) allow almost 400 wine producers to cultivate approximately 60 grape varieties. Combine this with the Roman baths hidden under the Gothic church of St. Theodulus, the wizard’s tower to the north of the city, the Valère Castle with its famous thousand-year-old organ, and walks along the bisse de Clavau, Sion’s cultural tradition affords much to be appreciated and enjoyed.
