South Tyrol

The magic of Italy’s Northern Frontier awaits.

Europe’s varied history spans across thousands of years. Nations came and went. Wars were won and lost. Borders were drawn and redrawn. One such fought over region is the Alsace or Elsass, belonging sometimes to Germany, then again to France; another is South Tyrol, Italy’s northernmost province.


Until 1918, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, but this almost completely German-speaking territory was occupied by Italy during World War I. After World War II, the Allies decided that South Tyrol would remain as a part of Italy, however to this day, the autonomous province is granted a considerable level of self-government, and a fiscal regime which allows it to retain 90% of revenue, while remaining a net contributor to the national budget. As of 2016, South Tyrol is the wealthiest province in Italy and among the wealthiest in the European Union.
