Schloss Kaltenberg—titled the “largest medieval festival in the world”—presents its own homegrown medieval spectacle. Granted the show plays at a real castle and has a knights’ tournament, it doesn’t claim to be a historical documentary. With its professional stunt show, the Kaltenberg jousting tournament draws a crowd of 10,000 at each battlefield performance. Add to that jugglers, mummers, wizards, catchy music, and delectable fair food—what an experience for all senses!

Kaltenberg is the counter piece to Landshut: a Mitmach-Fest, an immersion experience that you can’t resist. On three weekends in July, some shows held at night, Kaltenberg has become a Bavarian institution like Easter or Christmas. The castle terrain morphs into a medieval town with dozens of market stalls for food and crafts. Cavaliers, damsels, witches, and jesters play their parts. Rustic taverns and pubs invite for Gemütlichkeit in the encampments under large shade trees. And traveling artists entertain with music and stage acts. Whether you rock it out with Tanzwut, drink Turkish coffee in the Bedouin tent, or eat Knödel with Kraut, the Kaltenberg portal transports you to the Middle Ages.
