“Writing and reading have never been my cup of tea since from early childhood I always dealt with pigs.” With these lines sung by a wealthy Hungarian Gypsy pig farmer in Johann Strauss’s operetta “Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron),” which premiered in Vienna in October 1885, opened a feature about education in Germany published in our August/September 2013 issue. Here we investigated the development of the German education system primarily since the mid-18th century and the rationale behind teaching every child at least basic literacy skills. It explained the concept behind the German Grundschule or Volksschule, the school designed to teach the younger generation the fundamentals of the three r’s.
