Berlin: The Story of a City, by Barney White-Spunner (Pegasus Books, 2021) is arguably the best book in English on the topic. Much is available in German, but, as the author notes, not much in English, and what there is, covers specific time periods. This book covers the entire history of Berlin from its beginnings to the present. Guidebooks are superficial, usually covering “the top ten” things to do and see, whereas White-Spunner delves deeply into the history, literature, and culture of Berlin. With notes and bibliography covering forty pages, he has produced a fascinating and well researched book.
