(April 23, 1830 – April 4, 1912)
A painter, photographer and sculptor, Carl was born in Hilbersdorf in Silesia to Leopold, a retired Prussian army officer, and his wife Marie Kalinowska-Tshirski. Little is known of Carl’s childhood in Germany, but in 1845, when he was fifteen, his family immigrated to the Republic of Texas, soon to become the state of Texas. They came as part of the Adelsverein colonists, a group which hoped to create a new Germany on Texas soil.
